Flooding has affected all 50 states across the country. In 2016, 32 major disaster declarations were made involving flooding. Flood Disasters: Basic Facts Flood damages average $7.9 billion annually, and are rising 2% per year. About 9 million people live in Special Flood Hazard Areas (areas with a 1% chance of flooding/year). In 2016, there were 126 flood fatalities, more than any other natural disaster. The 30-year average is 84 fatalities per year. In an effort to reduce losses and build more resilient communities, the DHS Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) developed the Flood Apex Program – a cross-cutting program sponsored by FEMA to: Enhance community resilience Reduce flood fatalities Improve mitigation investment decisions Improve predictive flood analysis Improve flood data and access; and Reduce losses. -- JOIN THE CONVERSATION We want to hear from you… The Flood Apex Program, via the DHS S&T National Conversation Flood Resilience Dialogue, is facilitating a series of roundtable discussions and IdeaScale conversations with practitioners, consumers, and specialists on the Reduce Losses component of the Flood Apex Program. Combat forest fires with flood waters The forest fires of the California mountains are becoming too suspicious when they are released a few days prior of winds that come across that region. Year after year and month after month we see planes circling the fires dumping chemicals on to the fires. We use up natural resources and billions of dollars to fight them. But, year after year we see certain regions become seriously flooded from hurricanes and flood rains.... more » flood Voting 0 votes Active Active Submitted by June R Massoud (@junermassoud) + 03/Dec/18 6:23 PM Tell Us How to Make the National Conversation Better! Improving Transport Safety on Roads and Avoiding Vehicle Crashes to Save Lives Well, I suggest we start a new track for improving transport safety on roads and avoiding vehicle crashes. According to the statistics I've found on the Internet, there are over 32,000 road accidents and crashes on America's roads yearly. That's besides all of the crashes in Canada, Mexico and everywhere else worldwide. We all need to smarten up and start finding solutions to these problems. I'm up for the task, what... more » road-safety-vehicle-accidents Voting 1 vote Active Active Submitted by June R Massoud (@junermassoud) + 28/Dec/17 2:12 PM Tell Us How to Make the National Conversation Better! A Good Suggestion to All Travellers Worldwide Regarding Sleep Deprivation Most travellers who come to airports are totally stressed out due to sleep deprivation. They figure they'll come to the airport and sleep on the plane. While they're getting to the plane, during ticketing and at the waiting area, they become enraged and cause problems for everyone else. My suggestion is to advertise to all travellers on their tickets and electronic tickets, to get enough sleep before they travel. Decreasing Stress Levels at Airports by Creating a Zen-Like Environment for Airport Travellers and Workers You've got to start designing airports around the world to become more Zen-like. What I mean by this is to find ways to decrease stress levels through soft lighting, noise reduction, better internal infrastructure and designing hallways and airport paths indoors to be Zen-like and effective. Maybe introduce some plants in the ticketing areas, Zen-like music in the background, tell people to talk the least, wear comfortable... more » Voting 0 votes Active Active Submitted by June R Massoud (@junermassoud) + 30/May/17 4:22 PM Tell Us How to Make the National Conversation Better! We Need to Get Back to the Internet Discussions of 2015 In the summer of 2015, I had a discussion with several members of this group, specifically, Peter G Neumann and others. Could we please return to this discussion? We need to discuss provisions on getting the internet safety up to par and redesigned. At that time, we were generating good ideas for discussion. Please see to it that we can re-open these talks for our group. Much can be learned and taught together as collaborators.... more » Voting 0 votes Active Active Submitted by June R Massoud (@junermassoud) + 05/Feb/17 2:23 PM Tell Us How to Make the National Conversation Better! Making Other Key Areas Available for Discussion - Not Just Flooding I am assuming here that the reason you are focussing on flooding is because there is a dire need to find solutions during this winter season in North America. Maybe it would be a good idea to connect other topics as well so we could add our ideas as they come. The previous platform had many different topics with many ideas to discuss.
